The previous Lupin story was The Hollow Needle and I thought it was the weakest of the Arsene Lupin stories mostly because Lupin became less of a master criminal and more like an omnipotent deity. In the prior book Lupin matched wits with the very clever Herlock Sholmes while in The Hollow Needle he faces off against the gifted student Isidore Beautrelet. The problem was that Beautrelet was absolutely no match for Lupin who now seemed to be capable of anticipating everything and controlling all events. In fact he stole a treasure so ridiculously extravagant that it appeared nothing could be out of his reach. I questioned where Maurice Leblanc could take the character since Lupin was no longer under human constraints. Luckily in 813 LeBlanc has scaled things way back. The focus of 813 in completely different from Lupin versus Herlock Sholmes and The Hollow Needle. Those two stories are told from the perspective of Lupin’s adversaries. Beautrelet was in a sense the hero of the story even as he was completely dominated by Lupin. Here, Lupin is the focus of the story and his opponent is the mysterious adversary in the shadows. This is the first time Lupin seems to be at a disadvantage and I would say it improves the story significantly. We don’t learn the identity of Lupin’s foe until late in the book and it’s an interesting revelation. 813 is the closest to an actual crime mystery that Lupin has seen.
So this is an awesome book, right? Well, the big problem for me was that I became completely lost. There were numerous characters with dual identities including Lupin who had at least three. There were so many storylines that I was entirely baffled. I'm not even sure what Lupin was trying to steal. Something about a lost document and German royalty and taking over the world. The plot shifted gears so often I couldn’t follow and this has never happened to me with any other Lupin book. The book also felt a lot longer than previous books. Given my confusion I can’t give the book any higher than 3 stars. Maybe someday I’ll read it again and try to go through it a lot slower. Probably Not.

813 tomes 1 2 Arsene LUPIN SB t 4 Arsène LUPIN French Edition edition by Maurice Leblanc Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
With enough characters to keep things interesting, the novels plot moves along briskly. I enjoyed this novel for it's twists and turns.
Thoroughly enjoyable read, couldn't pick the ending and was kept entertained by the style of story presentation. Different to many other mystery tales I have found here.
While the story line was interesting, the writing style makes reading difficult. The author switches from first person to observer frequently. The language and writing style are foreign. The main character is not likeable.
An older style with much descriptive verbage...I liked it but some might not. Read a portion before purchasing. Certainly a distinctive style unlike most current writers.
Been reading a lot of Maurice LeBlanc stories lately, and I find them all to be enjoyable. But this one was quite complex, and intriguing, and that gave it a bit of an edge over some others I've read. I find Arsine's competition with Herlock Sholmes amusing, and refreshing. In my opinion, a fun read with all the beauty of the turn of the century as expertly described by the author.
A fascinating mystery about a very clever French thief Lupin. A mystery novel written before the Great War. For me, a product of 20th century America, I knew very little about the pre WWI European scene and the princes and emperors of the various European, especially German, states. And Lupin, the clever but patriotic French thief, does engage with them and also with the French police of his day, even if o the point of disguising himself and proving to be one of the best detectives of them all. I believe other readers will find this a journey to enjoy! DEvans
As the other review here mentions, it's hard to talk about 813 without ruining it's surprises, some of which are actually quite surprising (not typical in books of this era). In general terms, Lupin is called out of retirement after he's framed for the murder of a diamond czar -- the murder is actually tied into a dark secret that would affect the balance of power of the world powers.
This book is often considered to be the best Lupin book. I'm pretty sure that's not true, I think people are mistaking ambition for quality (it's not really the same thing) and that the best Lupin book, the one where LeBlanc was really firing on all cylinders, was the marvelous THE HOLLOW NEEDLE. But 813 is certainly very ambitious and unusual, and anyone who's interested in this character really needs to read it.
The most interesting thing about 813 is that it's structured as a novel, not a collection of short stories that are vaguely linked together. More it's the only Lupin book where the character, if not exactly criticized, is certainly more cleanly developed than he ever has before. We see all of Lupin's strengths here his courage, his improvisation, his sense of humor. But we also see very clearly some weaknesses his innate selfishness, for instance, or a (related) narcissism that fires off a lot of collateral damage.
There are two massive surprises in this story. The first, about halfway through, works wonderfully; the second is not nearly so surprising to today's audience -- you may well guess it on your own. That's a problem. I also think that Lupin works better in smaller doses -- over the long haul he tends to pall. (I guess I can only take so much smartassery.) HOLLOW NEEDLE works around that flaw in a very clever way; LeBlanc was, I think, trying to do something similar here but I don't think it's as effective. Finally a lot of the effect of 813 only works if you already know the series -- 813 is in some ways a comment on these earlier stories and books. The fact that it's hard to appreciate 813 in isolation also is a problem, I think.
So flawed, 813 persuades me that for the most part LeBlanc was at his best in smaller venues, where he could hit high points without having to vamp them up to such an extent. But it's very interesting, and Lupin's character evolves in unexpected ways through the telling of this story. I would recommend it, although this not the place to start.
